About Patea & Districts Boating Club

A bit of history

A group of interested boat owners held a meeting on 17th March 1965 in the Borough Council Chambers. The reason for the meeting was to form a boating club. The club was formed that night and the first committee was elected. No sooner was the club develop that they meet with the local councillors to discuss proposed developments down at the ramp.

The following suggestions were to be discussed at an AGM – safety and rescue, radio home base, purchase of dingy and lifesaving gear, distress flags and rockets, a tractor for hauling out boats. The club had 26 inaugural members.

Take a look at the first ever minutes of the club here… and take a look back to see how we used to launch the boats in the river a few years ago here…

Todays Club

The Patea & Districts Boating Club is situated on the Patea River a few hundred metres from the river mouth which leads out to Patea Banks, Patea Traps and Graham Bank. Facilities include a concrete boat ramp, jetty, wash down facilities, car & Trailer parking and club house.

Currently the Patea and Districts Boating Club has around 130 financial members, with 5 life members. Membership is open to any boat owner or crew member who uses the Patea boat ramp. There are many benefits of being a member including the wash bay, club rooms and live webcam of the jetty and river bar. The club holds a popular annual fishing competition in March and is open to all financial members.

Other popular events include the monthly ‘heaviest fish’ draw (for members), and the popular ‘take a kid fishing’ event.
